Doctoral research fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Jin Kristian Hurum is a PhD candidate at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His PhD project explores how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies shape practices of inclusion and exclusion in the public sector, with a focus on the sociotechnical and intersectional dynamics that influence implementation and everyday use. Jin has a BA in Media Studies and a MA in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at NTNU. His research interests lie at the intersection of technology, society, and public services, with a particular focus on AI, health technologies and how these technologies are experienced and interpreted by diverse users in everyday practices.

This PhD project explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can both promote and hinder inclusion in the public sector. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into public administration, they reshape everyday work practices, offering new opportunities for some, while marginalizing others. Groups such as older employees, low-wage workers, people with disabilities, and those with minority backgrounds may face increased barriers in this transformation. Through a sociotechnical perspective my project investigates how employees in diverse roles experience and adapt to AI in their daily work. Through interviews, shadowing, and workshops my thesis aim to generate insight into the social dynamics shaping use of AI in public workplaces.
