Ragna Hovig Ødegaardshaugen

PhD fellow at Oslo Metropolitan University

I have a professional background as both a schoolteacher and a teacher educator. I hold a master’s degree in Education with a specialisation in Norwegian (L1), as well as bachelor’s degrees in Music Didactics and in History. Before starting my PhD, I worked at the teacher education programme at Nord University, where my interest in developing and exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning grew stronger. This experience led me to pursue a PhD in Educational Sciences at OsloMet. My doctoral project represents a culmination of my academic path and professional experiences. I am particularly interested in investigating teaching methods that can strengthen teacher education and support high‑quality instruction in primary school. Through my research, I aim to contribute to practice‑oriented knowledge that benefits both teacher educators and future teachers

The PhD project explores how Digital Simulation-Based Practice Design (SPD) can be used as a teaching method in teacher education, with a particular focus on early writing instruction in the L1 classroom. As part of the research, I am developing and examining a digital simulation website using the framework of pedagogical practice design. The project investigates how SPD can better prepare student teachers for the instructional decisions and professional judgments they will encounter as newly qualified writing teachers. The project aims to provide new insights into the potential of SPD to strengthen teacher education and to support the development of student teachers’ knowledge, decision‑making, and practice as writing instructors.
