The number of violent conflicts is at its highest level since World War II, while trust in the media is in decline globally. Particularly in early stages of wars and conflicts, credible journalism is an important line of defence against misinformation and disinformation. Based on the premise that verifying the authenticity of information, images, video, and audio material is the foundation of all journalistic work, this PhD research project aims to identify strategies and opportunities inherent to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for journalistic verification, fact-checking, and investigations in war and conflict, and to recognise, identify, and mitigate the risks of using this technology for the credibility of journalism.
